Guntur,the headquarters of the Guntur District, is one of the oldest municipalities in the south having been constituted in 1866 A.D. Guntur district is the second most thickly populated district with 44,05,521(2001) in A.P. after East Godavari District 48,72,622(2001). 75% of the people depend on agriculture. This is the birth place of many great people of different walks of life, Viz:Tenali Rama Krishna, Tanguturi Prakasam , Vavilala Gopala Krishnaiah, Parvathaneni Veerayya Chowdary, N.G.Ranga and Kasu Brahmananda Reddy.
There are four Parliamentary and 19 State Assembly Constituencies in Guntur District.There are 9 Municipalities, 57 Mandals, 12 Towns,692 Grama Panchayats and 2,679 Primary schools in this district.
Guntur is an important commercial city and has several tobacco curng barns, cold storage units for Chilli, rice-mills, cotton ginning mills and oil mlls etc.
There are many places of worth seeing in Guntur District such as Amaravathi, Manasa Sarovaram near Guntur, Ethipothala Falls, Mangalagiri, Nagarjuna Konda, Nagarjuna sagar, Srisailam Sanctuary and Kotappa Konda. Nagarjuna Konda is situated 24kms away from Nagarjuna Sagar Dam. Nagarjuna Konda has a famous museum on the top of the hill which is first of its kind in the World. Nagarjuna Sagar named after the Buddhist saint Acharya Nagarjuna, was known as Vijayapuri in the past. It is also known as Buddhist site. Nagarjuna sagar, Srisailam Sanctuary spread over 3,560sq.kms. is the largest tiger reserve in India. Forest lands exrend to 8563.77 kms.This can be divided into three categories : 1. on the plains 2.fire wood forests 3.forests in low scopes. The Coastline is 43 kms. Fishing industry is popular. Nidubrolu, Bapatla and Nandivelugu are centers of fish breeding.
There are four rivers Krishna, Naguleru, Gundla Kamma and Chandravanka which support the agricultural needs of the crops of Paddy, Cotton, Chillies, Tobacco, Turmeric, Blackgrams, Greengrams and Maize. the main industries of this distict are cement, Poultry, Gunny Bags, Fertilizers, Ginning mils and Spinning mills.
Educationally it is one of the most advanced districts in A.P. Since the begining of Buddhist epoch, Guntur stood first in the matters of Educaton. Buddhists established universities in ancient times at Dhanyakataka and Nagarjuna Konda. At present with many educational institutions Guntur leads the other Andhra districts in the matters of education. The literacy rate of this dimtrict is 62.5%. Nagarjuna University was established for krishna, Prakasam and Guntur districts at Guntur. It was elevated to University status from Postgraduate level. Guntur has one of the biggest Bus stations ehich not only connect almost all the major cities in A.P. but also the Capitals of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
