Kollam was also called Quilon in the earlier days. This was one of the oldest sea ports of the Arabian coast or the Malabar coast. Spice Trade seems to have the main business from this port. Kollam district is a miniature kerala state since the district seems to have everything the state has within itself. Rivers, lagoons, lakes, hills, mountains, backwaters, beautiful beaches, a long sea coast, resorts etc. These details makes it one of the best tourist spot.

Kunnathur SC, Chavara, Karunagapally, Kundara, Kollam, Eravipuram and Chathanoor are the assembly segmments of this Lok Sabha Constituency. N.Sreekantan nair, S Krishnakumar, NK Premachandran are some of the notable politicians who have won the earlier elections. The present incumbent is P Rajendran of CPI M by defeating the nearest rival of the INC, Sooranad Rajasekharan, and Kizakkanela Sudhakaran, by a margin of 111071 votes.
