The course curriculum of M.Sc Bioinformatics consists of both theory and practical classes. The first three semesters focuses on theory and practicals, whereas in the 4th semester, the focus shifts completely on the project work and industrial seminars. The project report is to be submitted at the end of the 4th semester. Biological studies are done in this field through computer programming. Bioinformatics has now become an important part of all biological studies. Bioinformatics tools are playing an important role in understanding evolutionary aspects of molecular biology by comparing genomic and genetic data. Some of the topics covered during the course are probability, statistics, molecular biology, computing fundamentals, programming in C++, molecular imaging, drug design, genomics and proteomics.
Since more and more applications are coming up under bioinformatics, there is a wide ranges of jobs available after one finishes this course. It is a fast growing field and there is a great demand for professionals trained in bioinformatics by the pharmaceuticals industry for research and development of new drugs, vaccines, etc. Many after undergoing the course continue their education further by going for doctoral programs on the subject. There are also very good opportunities for doing advanced research in this field. Bioinformatics professionals are recruited by various organizations, such as those in healthcare, research, petroleum, software, IT, automotive, etc. A good many jobs and research opportunities are there in countries in Europe and in United States.
