Pass in 10+2 with physics, chemistry and biology or math. Candidates are to appear for entrance tests.

Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary field that combines biological sciences with the various scientific and engineering principles to manipulate living cells for betterment in healthcare, agriculture, food production, animal husbandry and pharmaceuticals. Industrial biotechnology chiefly focuses on the benefits that can be derived on the industrial front. Some of these benefits are reduction in pollution, resource conservation, availability of cheaper and environment friendly products and production of biofuels and biopolymers. The courses thus have elements from both the biological sciences and engineering technology. Some of the unique topics taught are cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, bioorganic chemistry, bioprocess principles, genetic engineering, bioinformatics, process engineering and so on.
Industrial biotechnology being a nascent field, the scope for employment in the country are still limited. Moreover, it being a highly research oriented field it is advisable that the students go for their masters and doctoral studies in industrial biotechnology or related fields like biomedical sciences, bioprocess engineering, etc. Most of the undergraduate students thus go abroad for their masters and research programs. With growing concerns about the environment, in the years to come, biotechnology is definitely going to make a huge impact the world over and India will not lag behind either. In this respect the country is investing heavily for research in fields such as genetic engineering, stem cell and biofuels. As of now most of the jobs are available in research institutions, chemical, biomass and the biofuel industry.
