The admission process may vary from institute to institute. However, in general one has to apply to the institute with a research proposal and an application form. On acceptance, the candidate will have to sit for a PhD entrance exam. Certain category of students are exempted from the exam. Those who have passed M.Phil, NET, GATE, UGC, CSIR(JRF), SLET exam can directly sit for the interview. Based on the evaluation of the research proposal the candidates are called for the interview by a research committee. One needs to come in the merit for final selection.
More about the course
The candidate will be doing the research work under a research supervisor. Generally there will be not more than 8 students under the supervisor. One can do part time or full time research work as per one’s convenience. Their tenure is 5 and 4 years respectively. In the beginning of the course the student gets to do the course work to get familiarized with the research methodologies and field of specialization. Exams for course work follow. Progress reports are to be submitted, seminar presentation is to be done, a research paper to be submitted followed by the PhD thesis and via-voce.
