Overview

Geoinformatics is a multi-disciplinary field that involves the monitoring, evaluating and managing of the natural resources on earth by taking the help of satellites and information technology. It’s through geo-spatial techniques, models and space technologies such as GPS that resources are analysed and estimated. Thus geoinformatics helps nations and economies monitor their natural resources such that they can be used in a sustainable way by the present as well as future generations. This way geoinformatics plays an important role in a country’s development. By using technology we are able to collect the necessary data regarding our resources and are thus able to assess, monitor and plan the optimum use of the resources.

Eligibility and course duration

Graduate or postgraduate in geology, geography, botany, zoology, chemistry, physics, biotechnology , environmental sciences, statistics and a host of other streams including engineering with a certain minimum marks.

M.Sc geoinformatics is a 2 year long course.

More about the course

A multi-disciplinary field that is an amalgamation of remote sensing, GPS, digital photogrammetry, GIS, IT, data interpretation, digital cartography and digital image processing provides you with the necessary knowledge and hands-on training on the above mentioned techniques and technologies. The program familiarizes you with the latest trends in geoinformatics and its numerous applications in managing the natural resources. Geoinformatics has been a boon to the world, as it has played a very effective role in say, waste water management, disaster management, forestry and other man-made and natural environmental issues. It’s by collecting spatial and non-spatial data that a person dealing in geoinformatics is able to acquire, analyze, manage and disseminate the concerned information.

Some of the topics that are taught are; ecosystem studies, remote sensing fundamentals, urban environment management, field techniques, fundamentals of geoinformatics, research methodology, digital data processing and a few more.

Jobs and opportunities

Geoinformatics is finding increasing applications in solving natural and even man-made problems concerning the environment. In almost every field geoinformatics has its presence. One can have a career in geoinformatics concerning management of land, ground water, waste water, natural disasters like drought & flood, agriculture, forests, mining activity, military, transport, urban planning, aerospace research and so on. Most of the jobs in this sector are with the government in jobs such as analyst, GIS specialist, developer and so on. There is further scope for continuing one’s education by undergoing M.Phil or PhD in the subject.
