For a country like India blessed with a long coastline and plentiful of water resources, there’s an immense potential for setting up fish processing industries. And there are many of them on the coastlines and on the mainland. Because of its popularity, fish is consumed by a large section of the population. A large part of the catch is exported too. The fishing industry provides for job opportunities to a large section of the population. It is always the endeavour of the state and the central governments to improve upon the catch of fish and set up processing plants to preserve and add value to the catch, thus improving upon the income of the section of the population dependent on the fishing industry.

Eligibility and course duration


Graduation degree in fisheries sciences in the relevant subject with 60% or more marks. Selections are mostly on merit or entrance tests.

The main idea of the postgraduate course in fish processing is to make available competent personnel who have the necessary technical knowledge to transfer technology to the fish processing plants and thus give a fillip to the industry. The course imparts the necessary skills to understand the various processing techniques and also focuses on developing newer techniques to aid the industry. The course is research based and aids in developing the research skills of the students.

Job opportunities


There are a good many opportunities both in the central and the state government in the various departments concerning fisheries. One can get jobs in organizations such as Marine Products Export Development Authority, Export Inspection Agency, Coastal Aquaculture Authority of India as Technical Officers and Assistant Directors. You can also become a Scientist or a Technical Officer in Fisheries Survey of India (FSI), National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) and at other places. Other than these one can get into academic institutions as assistant professors, lecturers, research assistants, etc. There are also options in banks such as NABARD. In the private sector there are opportunities as managers in seafood processing, export houses and in fish farming. Finally one has the option to undergo PhD.
