B.E Bioinformatics Admissions 2017 - 2018 Academic Year

Bachelor of Engineering in Bioinformatics

Aspiring to become a bioinformatics specialist and get into the management of biological data through computer applications? A role similar to that of a computer scientist, learn here all about the course B.E. Bioinformatics Engineering. Learn about the colleges, eligibility, course duration and the opportunities in this field.

Course Name: B.E Bioinformatics
Group:
Stream: Science
Course Category: Biotechnology
Computer
Duration: 4 Years

Overview

The role of a bioinformatics specialist is quite similar to that of a computer scientist. They apply their knowledge and expertise in the field of computers in managing biological and genomic data. The information is kept in databases built by them and is processed, analysed and interpreted by using suitable algorithms. The information is then utilized by medical scientists for managing and analysing molecular and genomic data. A bioinformatics specialist works along with the scientists and researchers in supporting them with their data storage and analysing needs. They help with data collection, preparing reports and writing articles for scientific journals. To support the research work they document data changes, modifications and other issues that may have an impact on the research.

Eligibility and course duration

Pass in 10+2 from a recognized board or university with Physics, Chemistry and Math. Admissions are mainly through entrance exams.

Duration of this course is 4 years.

More about the course

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on aspects from biology, computer science and mathematics. It is an upcoming field too with lots of future potential. As a professional in this field you will be mainly feeding data, analysing and interpreting data concerning biological functions. As such, in this course you will be learning about gene sequencing, protein structures and other principles connected with biotechnology. Also known as computational biology, you will be imparted knowledge about developing algorithms for analysing various relationships between data sets and other functions. Since this is a highly technological field it is essential that one always keeps abreast with the latest technological developments. To excel in this field one also needs to become proficient in computer programming and developing algorithms.

Jobs and opportunities

A lot of students after passing this course prefer to go for postgraduate study. In this respect one can join an M.Tech/MS program in bioinformatics in the country or abroad. Beyond that doctoral programs like PhD are available for one to opt. Since it’s a developing field, a lot of scope is available for research in this sector. Currently, the data sets being generated by the biological and medical labs are so huge that they cannot be analysed by manual processes. Bioinformatics specialists play a crucial role here. The future is very bright, as more applications are likely to come in the field of chemistry, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and medicine. Opportunities are also there in genomics and in genetic research.
