Kannada has another less popular name as 'Canarese or Kanarese' and it is one of the Dravidian languages in India. It is spoken in Karnataka predominantly and in some other states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, etc it is spoken by linguistic minorities. It is considered as a scheduled language of India and official language of Karnataka. This makes it very important for candidates to learn Kannada if they want to have good jobs in Karnataka.
Through Doctorate degree in Kannada (PhD in Kannada), candidates learn each and every detail about the language including its history, evolution, different forms, famous authors and many more.
Candidates who have already done their masters in Kannada are eligible for this course. The minimum qualifying marks varies between 50-55%. In some cases, candidates having prior knowledge of Kannada (but do not have their Masters degree in Kannada or related subjects) are also allowed.
Admission procedure includes filling and submission of Application form with all the required documents. Being theoretical subject, the cost of course is very low and even candidates may get stipends easily. They need to contact the supervisor with their topic of research or SOP. Some times, they need to change the same as per their supervisor's need.
The duration lies between 3-5 years.
Further study options
After completion of PhD, candidates can get good paying jobs easily. If any candidate wants to study further, Post Doctorate is the option as regular degree.
Through this course, candidates study about Kannada literature, philosophy of the Kannada language and its linguistics. The initial part of the course includes reading and understanding of available literature. After that, candidate starts his/ her own research work. Please note that the selected topic must be unique in nature. The topics usually selected are related to Kannada Drama, Kannada Literary Criticism, Kannada Poetry, Literary History, etc.
At the end of the course, candidates need to submit the detailed thesis where they have to mention all the details about the research and results/ conclusions.

They can also become a Translator for translating books, journals, etc. They can work as a freelancer for content development in Kannada. They can start their own tuition classes and can also become interpreter (general/ liaison/ consecutive).
