Agritech or agricultural biotechnology is a sub-field of biotechnology that mainly deals with the technological advances in the field of agriculture. In recent times there have been a good many changes in agricultural practices in the country because of the advances that we have seen in the field of biotechnology. Genetically modified crops are one such example. Over the years, scientists have been able to bring in changes in many of the desirable properties of plants and crops. Some of these improvements are in pest and disease control, size and quality of crop, growth rate, colour, taste, flavour and many other desirable qualities. All that has been possible through genetic engineering that enables us in bringing changes in the gene structure of the plants.

Graduation in science in a relevant field of study preferably in biological sciences, chemistry and others.

The aim of this course is to acquaint you with the technological changes being brought in the field of agriculture which had till recent years been following mainly tradional methods of cultivation and production. The course curriculum familiarizes you with the topics through theory classes and also provides you with opportunities to hone your skills through laboratory practicals. The course also provides you with a sound footing for research.

You are thus provided with opportunities in farming, agri-business, aquaculture, sericulture, soil and water conservation, agricultural research, agricultural education, etc. You have opportunities in dairy farming, processing of grains, food processing, pesticide and fertilizer manufacturing other than oil production and numerous other activities in the agro-industry. You could also be working in tea estates and other similar farms like coffee plantations. With a degree in this field one can get employed in the government sector in its ministries and departments concerned with agricultural production. There are also wide opportunities for pursuing M.Phil and PhD courses thus making way for a research based or an academic career.
