An instrument mechanic is one who repairs, troubleshoots and services a variety of instruments. Most of these instruments work on electrical, electronic and mechanical principles. Many of these instruments, such as pressure and temperature gauges are used extensively by a variety of industries and as such there’s a great demand for instrument mechanics to repair and service them. An instrument mechanic is also involved with installation and maintenance of the instruments for control and automation purposes. These days, because of the advancements in technology, an instrument mechanic has to know a lot about electrical and electronic principles too. An instrument mechanic could be known by various names, such as instrument fitter, technician or an artificer.

Eligibility and course duration


Pass in class 10th. Considering the complexities involved these days in the instrument trade, it is preferable to have a 10+2 qualification in the science stream.

Duration of the course is 2 years. However, there could be different courses ranging from 6-24 months.

In these certification courses you will be learning about installing, repairing, servicing and adjustment of instruments being used in a host of industries and laboratories. As an instrument mechanic you will learn working with lots of gauges, meters and instruments. Most such instruments are being used for measurement of physical parameters and control of processes. Other than the basics on instrumentation you will be learning about the electrical and electronic fundamentals on which the working of the instrument depends. You will pick up skills in adjusting, calibrating of instruments and in following safety practices that goes with handling the instruments. You learn about concepts on measurement of pressure, flow, temperature, level, force and other such variables. A few other concepts that you learn about in this course are process control, fluid dynamics, motors, signalling, hydraulics and pneumatics.
