Master of Technology is mostly used in its abbreviated form as 'M.Tech'. It is a post graduate course in technical field and is considered as a professional line. The specialization of Petroleum Geology deals with study about origin, accumulation, exploration, and movement of fuels like petroleum and other hydrocarbons. Candidates learn about different disciplines which are required for searching of hydrocarbons and oil explorations. There are seven important key elements of this course, which are source, seal, reservoir, timing, trap, migration ad maturation.
Candidates holding B.E. and B.Tech degree from any reputed or affiliated institute in related specialization are eligible for this course. The minimum qualifying marks ranges between 55%-60% for most of the institutes.
Admission can be taken by performing good in entrance examinations. These can be of institute level, state level or national level and candidates can apply for any of them (even all of them) and can get admission depending upon their performance in respective examinations.
The duration is 2 years n regular course. These 2 years are divided into 4 different semesters. Each semester send with final examinations and candidates needs to qualify each semester separately.

The course starts with topics like Geo-statistics and reservoir modeling, structural styles and basin analysis, Mathematic modeling, sequence stratigraphy and Depositional systems. Candidates also study about applied geoscience methods, Wave Theory, Seismic reflection methods related to Petroleum, and decision Analysis.
Seismic interpretation, formation evaluation and Seismic amplitude analysis are considered as an important part of the course.
The last part includes industrial training of candidates where they learn through experiencing various facts of professional life.
The main job areas for these candidates are fuel based industries like Reliance Industries Ltd., ONGC, Essar Oil, IOCL, Reliance Energy, British gas, Cairn Energy and many more.
The main designations they can have are Production Geology Advisor, Technical Service Manager, Exploration Advisor, Well-site Geologist, Specialist Geologist, etc.
If they have interest in teaching, they can go for teaching in institutes offering related courses.
