B.E. is Bachelor degree in the field of Engineering. It is a professional course with excellent job aspects. The specialization of Petroleum and Offshore Engineering is one of the various engineering branches with high demand in current scenario. It deals with reservoir technology, drilling and various production disciplines using hydrocarbon resources in offshore. Candidates also learn about exploration developments, operations phases, etc. The course teaches about requirements for oil exploration, production and refining of oil at sea. Study about geophysical analyzing and other data collection for building the oil reservoir is also done through this course.
12th passed candidates are eligible for this course. The candidate must have studies mathematics, chemistry and physics during his or her 11th-12th. The minimum qualifying marks should be 60% for most of the institutes.
For admissions, most of the reputed institutes conduct entrance examinations. Candidates performing well in that get short listed for interview and then finally get their admissions confirmed.
The duration for this course is 4 years or we can it 8 semesters. Each semester is having equal duration and the whole syllabus is divided accordingly. Each semester has its own final examinations and candidates need to clear each semester separately for successfully completing the course.
Further Study options
After this course, candidates can go for Masters in Engineering (M.E.) with same or similar specialization. Other options are M.Tech or Masters of Technology and M.S. or Masters of Sciences. These are post graduation courses and after this, candidates can also pursue PhD (a research based course).
Candidates learn about Petroleum Exploration in very much details through this course. Study about Well Engineering and Design, Formation Evaluation, Well Completion and Services, Mud Engineering, Reservoir Simulation, etc are also part of this course. Some elective topics like Database Management in Petroleum Industry, Flow Assurance, Non-Conventional Hydrocarbon Resources, Natural Gas Engineering, etc are also included in the course and candidates have choice to select some of them as per their interest.
The later part of course teaches about Petroleum Production, Improved / Enhanced Oil Recovery, Basics of Sub sea Engineering, Well Control Methods, Integrated Reservoir Management, etc.
The course also includes some lab sessions and one major project which give candidates to have hands on experience.
These candidates can work in oil companies, industries for petroleum refining, and manufacturing companies for production and refining instruments. They work for separation of plants for oil, water, gas, etc.
