M.S is Masters of Science- a post graduation course in technical stream. The specialization of Telecommunication is a fast growing field in the field of engineering. It has various applications in different sectors like smart grids, banking, office information systems, corporate networks, etc. The advance domains like wireless network, gigabit optical networks, multimedia communications, etc has increased its demand.
The course focused on graduates from the field of computers and electrical engineering and trains them to work in the field of telecommunication successfully. This field is combination of CS and ECE courses. It is a technical blend of legal aspects of networking, engineering, managerial aspects, etc to serves this field with excellence.
Admission is completely on the basis of performance in Entrance examination. These examinations can be of national level, state level or institute level. Some institutes also conduct interview sessions after entrance examinations.
Candidates graduate in B.Tech or B.E. from any recognized university are eligible for this course. The minimum qualifying marks may vary from one institute to another and need to be checked before submitting the application form.
Candidates having prior knowledge about Programming (C++, Java), Computer architecture and Quantitative Methods for Information Systems are preferred.
The duration is 1-2 years (some institutes take 1 year and some take 2 years for completion).
Further Study options
M.S. is a Masters degree after which candidates become eligible for jobs but still if someone wants to study further, he or she can pursue research based PhD degree.
The course teaches about everything related to telecommunication like Introduction to Wireless and Personal Communications Systems, Computer Network Design and Analysis, Random Signal Analysis, Computer Network-Architecture Protocol Standards, etc. It also teaches about Networks Management and Security, Principles of Broadband ISDN and ATM, Introduction to Data Communication, High Performance Switches and Routers, etc. There are many elective subjects also like Internet and Higher Layer Protocols, Parallel Processing Systems, Wireless and Digital Communications, etc and candidates can select any of them as per their interest.
Study about Compression in Multimedia Engineering and Multimedia Systems is also done in this course.
The last part of course includes a project on telecommunication, which can be done in any related research lab of telecom industry.
