M.Phil is a research oriented short term course with 1-2 years duration. Instrumentation field deals with study about phenomena of measurement from nano-scale till macro-scale with its applications in various domains like molecular processes in biological cells, chemical processes in industrial reactors, disease diagnosis, environmental monitoring, drug and explosive detection, etc.
Candidates learn about all the advancements related to instrumentation including complex mass spectrometries, optical spectroscopies, secondary ion mass spectrometry, laser trapping, microfluidics, laser generated ultra-sound and many more.
Post graduate candidates are eligible for this course. The minimum qualifying marks should be 50% or higher and degree should be done from recognized or affiliated institute. Candidates having prior knowledge about instrumentation are preferred.
Admission procedure can be direct on first come first serve basis. For that, interested candidates just need to submit the filled application form before due date. Some institutes may conduct entrance examinations or may select the candidates on merit basis.
The duration varies from 1 year to 2 years. Each year is divided into 2 semesters with equal duration of 6 months. The syllabus is also divided accordingly. It can be pursued as regular or part time mode but it cannot be enrolled for distance learning program as it requires technical lab sessions to be attended personally.
Further Study options
After completion of M.Phil, the only option available for higher studies is PhD (Doctorate of Philosophy)- a research based long term course. Other related short term courses can be done to have better job options.
This course is a combination of theoretical and practical studies about instrumentation. It includes Pedagogical Methods in Instrumentation, Bio Medical Instrumentation, Embedded Systems, Research Methodology and Trends in Instrumentation, etc. Computer based instrumentation like MEMS and their application, VLSI System Design, Digital Signal Processing, RTOS and Vx Works, etc are also included in the course.
Candidates also learn about teaching technology, methods of teaching, etc. The part of Research methodology is also included which deals with the study about topics like transducers, microcontrollers and embedded systems, detectors, interface and standards, and many more.
The last part of course includes thesis writing based on the short research conducted by candidates.
