M.D.S is an abbreviated name of 'Masters in Dental Surgery', which is a post graduation course in dental surgery specialization. It is again having different sub specialization and 'Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery' is one among them which deals with study about many dentistry related diseases treatment, defects and injuries in neck, head, jaws, face, tissues of mouth (both hard and soft) and maxillofacial (which includes jaws and face) region.
This course helps the candidates to improve their academic and clinical knowledge of their subject and to develop their communicative skills which will help them in having diversified career options.

Candidates holding B.D.S. degree from a reputed institute and have completed 1 year compulsory internship are eligible for this course.
Some institutes accept candidates after completing their 2 years of P.G.Diploma from institutes recognized by the DCI in any particular sub specialization of Dentistry. In such cases, the duration for this course will be 2 years only.
Most of the dental institutes and medical institutes conducts entrance examinations and many institutes consider the national level examinations for admissions.
Interested and eligible candidates need to submit their application form enclosed with all other required documents like age proof, medical fitness certificate, fee, etc.
After appearing in entrance examination; the institute shortlists the candidates depending upon their performance in the same.
It is 3 years for this course. Candidates having Post Graduation Diploma already done will be having 2 years duration for M.D.S. completion.

After completion of this post graduation course, interested candidates can pursue research based degree, that is PhD (Doctor of philosophy) in their field.
