Course Description of B.Sc Plant Biotechnology


The degree course is three years duration, it prepares students with foundation in plant biotechnology and provides a career pathway. The course deals with the study of application of biotechnology in the varied sectors. . The study focuses on imparting in-depth knowledge of plant growth, physiology, genetics,. pathology, development of crop plants for food, feed and other industrial uses. The program enables then to equip with techniques and technologies for cop development. Training provides students with skills required for identifying and developing technological strategies for quality crop development. The study covers the areas of basic botany, cell biology, biotechnology application, physiology, plant ecology, molecular biology, bio writing. Emphasis is laid on practical sessions, laboratory work, project work, practical classes and hands on experience in training period.

The students should have passed course in higher secondary (10+2)/ PUC with Physics, Chemistry and Biology from a recognized State board.

The program combines the areas of agriculture and science for developing strategies for improvement in human life and environment conservation. The course includes research work laboratory sessions, seminars, project work field visits, assessments and tests. The study subjects includes basic botany, cell biology, biotechnology application, physiology, plant ecology, molecular biology and bio writing. The techniques and technology of biotechnology are applied in fields of agriculture and horticulture. The primary focus in on the study of plant breading technologies and techniques. Experiments are conducted using applied biotechnology for improving resistance against diseases and for tolerance to extreme climatic conditions.They develop products to identify best seeds and animals for selective breeding. The program offers all aspects of fundamental research in fields of biotechnology, students learn about molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, cell and tissues, plant science and biodiversity. Training provides strong foundation skills in biotechnology, enhances the reasoning and logical thinking abilities. it also trains them in decisions making skills and in interpersonal capacities.
