M.E. is an abbreviated name of Master of Engineering which is a Master’s degree in technical stream and considered as a professional degree. The specialization of Embedded and Real Time Systems teaches about reaction against input within a specific time period. Embedded system can be defined as a combination of software and hardware designed with a purpose to perform specific functions. ABS control of car is a good example for it. The course includes designs of Real time Systems, Embedded Networking, Embedded Systems, Embedded Communication and Software Design, Microcontroller based System design and other related topics. It also teaches about Ad hoc networks, Wireless and Mobile Communication, etc as an introductory part of the course.
A candidate needs to be graduate in technical stream to become eligible for this course. So candidates holding B.E. or B.Tech degree in related stream are eligible for this course. The minimum qualifying marks should be 0% or higher and the course should pursued from a affiliated institute.
Being a course in demand the competition is tough for getting admission. Most of the institutes conduct their own entrance examinations to short list the candidates depending upon their performance in the same.
Candidates need to submit their application form along with all the other required documents and fee before last date.
The duration for this course is 2 regular years. These 2 years includes theoretical classes, lab sessions and short term projects. For convenience of teaching, these 2 years are divided into 4 semesters, each having 6 months duration.
Further Study options
After completion of this course, interested candidates can enroll for PhD- a research based Doctorate degree which will allow them to conduct research on the topic of their interest. The topic must be unique in nature should get approved by the supervisor. There is no age restriction for this course.
The course starts with basic topics like Design Of embedded systems, real Time systems, Applied Mathematics for Electrical engineering, Micro Controller based system design, real Time operating system, VLSI Architecture, Embedded networking, design methodologies, etc. The course also includes lab sessions for better understanding of embedded systems and has options for some elective courses like Soft computing techniques, Ad-Hoc networks, Embedded Linux, Computer architecture, etc.
These candidates can work in Aeronautics Industries, Defense Industries, Communication Industries, etc. The main designations they can have are Test leader, Associate engineer, Embedded Design Engineer, System Firmware Engineer, etc.
