Ph.D in Statistics is a doctoral course after completing the masters degree. The course duration is minimum 3 years. You have to pass M.Sc/MA in mathematics or Statistics with minimum 55% marks or A grade in grading system. Many universities in India are offering Ph.D in statistics either in mathematics department or in statistics department. Preference will be given to students we have done M.Sc in statistics. The person who want to get admitted into this course should identify a professor or any other recognised research guide in the department and your application is to be submitted through him to The Head of the Department and from there to college Principal. There are fellowships for this course. If the candidate is qualified in NET exam conducted by CSIR and UGC. There are some universities which will have separate fellowships known as URF fellowships. These fellowships will be offered to students who are working for their Ph.D without any fellowships.
In the departments some professors will have some research schemes sanctioned by UGC or CSIR. They will take some scholars to work in that on a temporary basis with fellowships. There are chances you may get a chance to join in that and you can pursue your doctorate through that project.
Once you finish your Ph D you will be qualified for lecturer post in statistics and also to mathematics in colleges and universities with UGC scales. Almost all colleges of science will have this course. You will have a chance of getting lecturer or Associate Professor post in the Universities also. Indian Statistics department will have many vacancies for doctorates in this subject as scientists and statisticians. Indian Institute of Statistics is a prime research establishment in our country. They have many branches in India. There are good chances to a Doctorate to get a decent post in this Institute. In many government departments there are posts for these qualified people as statistician.
After completing the Doctorate you can continue your further research work as Post Doctoral Fellow with CSIR and UGC fellowship. This will be for a period of 2 years. You can also get selected as pool officer in universities under CSIR for a period of 2 years with their fellowship.
The person who has completed the Ph.D can also have a chance of appearing for general posts like bank officers and class I or Class II posts in State Government or Central Government Departments.
