Manuscriptology is the science and art of studying manuscripts. Whereas, palaeography concerns with studying ancient handwriting that is written on such manuscripts. Manuscriptology and palaeography are thus related fields complimenting each other. One leads to the study of the other. The idea behind studying this course is to research on the art of writing and the writing materials used in the ancient days. The intention is also to preserve those manuscripts which have historical significance and make known to the world the knowledge that is stored in them. As a result, both Manuscriptology and palaeography are important in deciphering and reading the information that is stored in them. The study is also important in dating manuscripts and ancient texts with a certain level of precision.

Eligibility and course duration


10+2 or an equivalent qualification preferably in the humanities stream with at least 50% marks in aggregate. Students with interests in history and archaeology are most suitable for this course. Duration of the program is 1 year.

It also includes studying the conservation and preservation techniques that help preserve such rare manuscripts. Cataloguing such manuscripts, classifying and indexing them is also part of the learning process. Other than that manuscripts are understood for their importance, transcribed and collated. The types of scribal errors in context with manuscripts are identified. Genealogy of manuscripts and manuscript libraries are some other objects of study in this course.

As far as palaeography is concerned, one gets to study about the languages and scripts in India. The paleographic developments with respect to different periods, ancient and medieval are taken into consideration. As part of cultural study too palaeography has its importance, like the edicts from the period of Emperor Ashoka. The field of study also includes the forms of handwriting used in different periods and regions in India. Some such languages and scripts that are found in these manuscripts are Kannada, Tibetan, Gaudi and Newari
