Bachelor of Design or B.Des is a graduation level course in the field of Fashion and interior designing. This course is focuses on study about garment construction, tailoring, formal water techniques, fitting, creating sustainable fashion, etc. It gives main emphasis of fitting of costumes and other support features related to fashion industries. Candidate requires to have basic idea about sewing techniques and should have sewing proficiency before enrolling for this course. The course covers both creative designing part as well as technical aspects related to apparel designing, manufacturing, specification development, pattern making, color, textile, business and computer based design technology.
Candidates who have passed 12th standard from a reputed institute and recognized board are eligible for this course. Prior knowledge about sewing technology and creative designing is preferred for this course.
The age restriction and minimum qualifying marks need to be checked before submission of application form.
Usually the admissions can be availed directly or on merit basis. Only some reputed institutes may conduct entrance test to validate the knowledge and skills of candidates related to the course. In that case, candidates performing well in the same are get short listed for the course.
The duration is 3-4 years for this course. Some institutes follow semester systems and they take 6-8 semesters for completion respectively.
Further Study options
After successfully completing this course, candidates can go for post graduation in same or related field. They can pursue M.Des or M.Sc. in fashion designing/ Apparel designing/ Accessories Design, etc.
M.B.A can also be done if interest persists in management.
The course starts with teaching about fundamentals of fashion design, principles and elements of design, fundamentals of computers, fashion communications, etc.
Then candidates learn about textile fibers, tarns, pattern making, stitching, fashion illustration, garment construction, etc. All these topics include theory as well as practical session to have better understanding.
A part about historic costumes, entrepreneurship development, portfolio presentation, fashion business management, Apparel computer aided design, etc is also included in the course.
These candidates can work in apparel export manufacturing firms, retails shops, research institutes, etc. They can become a designer, fashion stylist, product development assistant, retail fashion designer, etc very easily.
