Overview


When talking about patternmakers, most people think of the apparel or the fashion industry, where patterns are made so that mass production of garments, all of the same size and fit, can be done. In the industrial sector or to be specific, in the metal casting sector, patterns are very commonly used. To work in the foundries, you are to be aware of these patterns that are made up of different materials depending upon use and application. Now similar to the apparel industry, these patterns are basically a replica of the object or component that is to be casted. These patterns are then used to create a cavity where the liquid or molten metal is poured. The castings are thus produced.

Eligibility and course duration


High school or 10th class pass. The duration of the course is of 1 year. Because of high temperatures involved, working in foundries is not an easy task. You need to be in good physical shape so as to cope with the arduous tasks that includes handling heavy objects.

Rather than working in the apparel industry, industrial pattern makers work in foundries, where metals are casted. Herein this course you will begin with the role of patterns in the casting process. You learn about the different patterns that are to be used depending upon the size, intended use of the casting and the metal used in the casting process. Patterns are generally required for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals like aluminium. You also learn of the different materials that are used for making the foundry patterns. A few such materials are wood, polystyrene, POP or plaster of paris and in some specific instances, metal patterns. These patterns enable us to get those intricate shapes and sizes that we get to see in metal castings. You get hands-on experience in this trade so as to learn making patterns of exacting standard. You are trained on the techniques that goes into patternmaking and get to learn different patterns such as hand mould and shell core pattern.

An industrial patternmaker has scope for employment in factories and manufacturing plants that have foundries and casting shops. The pattern shops in these foundries are the places where a patternmaker gets to work in the metal casting industry. Patternmakers also work in the tool, die and mold making industry.
