M.Phil is Master of Philosophy and as its name suggest, it is a research based post Graduation level course available in all the streams. M. Phil in Music teaches about all the different aspects of Music. The course includes study about medium of musical art that is sound and silence. Candidates learn about pitch, rhythm, dynamics, sonic qualities of timbre and texture and many other important elements in detail.
Candidates willing to go for a teaching career in higher levels like colleges are suitable for this course. It is also beneficial for candidates good in song writing and composing songs.
The course requires a masters degree from a reputed institute or college to become eligible for this course. This should be done in Music or related field. The minimum qualifying marks should be 55% and age criteria need t be checked from the selected institute for application submission.
The admission procedure includes a written test and an interview session in most of the reputed institutes. It is to validate the prior knowledge of the candidate. Some private institutes also offer direct admissions.
Candidates need to submit the duly filled application form and other required documents before last date.
The duration for this course is 2 regular years for candidates pursuing it in regular mode. It can be enrolled for distance learning mode and in that case the duration will be varied and need to be checked from the selected institute.

After M.Phil, candidates are suitable and even ready for pursuing PhD as they have learned the basics of research in M.Phil. PhD does not have any age restriction in most of the institutes and gives opportunities to conduct researches on the topic of own choice.
M.Phil being a research based course, it teaches about Research Methodologies during initial period of the course. Candidates learn about meaning and sources of research in Indian Music, areas of research in Music, hypothesis, selection of problems, etc. Candidates collect data about sources, methods and various tools related to music research. These can be historical, survey based, experimental and a case study based method.
Then data analysis, interpretation and conclusion can be made at the end.
They can become music attorney, teacher, film music director, editor, composer, art director, music software programmer, disc jockey, etc very easily. They can join music industries, music stress, advertising agencies, bands, etc as per their interest.
