M.S. or Master of Surgery is a Post Graduate degree course in the Medical stream. It has many specializations available for candidates as per their interest. M.S. in Orthopedics is focused on surgery related to chronics, acute, traumatic and overuse injuries. It also deals with other disorders related to musculoskeletal systems. These candidates learn about ailments related to arthritis, congenital deformities, trauma in both surgical as well as non-surgical means. To become eligible for this course, candidates need to complete their M.B.B.S. degree with at least 50% marks from a recognized and registered medical institute. The eligibility regarding age is something which needs to be checked before submission of application from the selected institute as it varies from one institute to another.
For admissions, candidates need to approach the administrative department of the selected institute and get the prospectus and application form. Then they need to submit their duly filled application form enclosed with all other required documents and application fee before the due date. It is advised to check the details including eligibility criteria carefully before application submission to avoid the end moment rejection.
The duration is 3 years of this course. These 3 years includes theoretical studies, lab sessions, and hand on experience.
Further Study options
After completion of this course, candidates can go for Ph.D. in Orthopedics or any other related subject. Other options include M.P.T or Ortho physiotherapy, FOR (fellowship in orthopedic rehabilitation), etc.
As mentioned above, the course includes both theories as well as practical sessions. It includes basic science and its related orthopedics, Traumatology and related aspects, principles and practice of orthopedic diseases and operative Orthopedics, etc. Recent advancements in the field of Orthopedic is also included in the course to keep the candidates up-to-date.
The practical sessions include case studies, Pathology specimens, and X-rays based studies, Implants and Instruments, Orthosis and Prosthesis, etc.
After completion of this course, candidates can become a professional Orthopedics. They can join Hospitals, clinics, Indian railways, Ordnance Factories health services, Central Health services, defense services, etc as per their choice and interest.
They can also become Professor in a medical institute, Specialist Panel Doctor, Anesthetist, medical officer, etc.
