Introduction

An MS course in OBG or Obstetrics and Gynecology is an apt course for surgeons who want to specialize in female diseases. Every year huge number of women die due to female diseases. A surgeon who has specialized in OBG or Obstetrics and Gynecology can help reduce that number or eventually eliminating it totally. You will learn the diseases that are most common in obese or pregnant women. You will learn the procedures that are to be followed post operation by a recuperating lady. In the first two years of this course, you will learn the theory of gynecology and female specific diseases. In the last year of this course, you will be actually diagnosing women with such diseases. You will maintain a record of women who have just delivered their children. You will have to follow up the condition of such women post their operation and before they are released.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. The students must complete their MBBS degree prior to this course. Some institutes add one more criterion for MBBS students. Some institutes look for a 1-2 year work experience of those MBBS students.
  2. The students must obtain minimum 55% in their qualifying examination.
  3. The students are also supposed to sit for an entrance examination. If they clear this entrance examination, then they will be able to study this MS course.


Job Prospects

  • You can join as a junior surgeon in any hospital. Your job will be to help senior surgeons during operations of female patients. After a few years of experience, you will be promoted as a senior surgeon. As a senior surgeon, you will be in charge of the operations, especially the critical ones.
  • While you are a junior surgeon, you can also become a local anesthetist. You will have to see that the anesthesia is given to the patients in the proper amount and in proper method.
  • You can open your own private chamber and practice gynecology. In this case, you will not be responsible for any operative procedure. You will have to just look after the patients and be responsible for their antenatal care and postnatal care. You can also join a government hospital as a gynecologist.
  • After a few years of experience as a surgeon, you can become a medical professor. You will have to guide the future generation of doctors in performing critical operations.
  • If you don't want to become an academician, then you can also become a medical secretary.
