Sports science as a field is slowly gaining popularity in India. In recent years India has been doing a lot better in international sports including the Olympics. A master’s or M.Phil degree in sports science or other related fields such as sports and exercise science, physical education, etc. For getting selected to the program you may have to sit for a written test and interview.

With a number of courses coming up in sports and exercise science at the undergraduate as well as diploma level, many are taken it up as a full time career of becoming a fitness expert, coach or sports therapist. However, a plain graduate or post graduate diploma in sports science may not be enough for reaching the upper echelons of this increasingly popular field. A PhD in sports science or in say exercise science gets you better exposure to the world of sports science and rehabilitation and can thus provide you with a rewarding career. Like most PhD programs, the first few semesters you focus on coursework and research methodology. Among the number of areas for research in sports science and rehabilitation are nutrition, exercise physiology, psychology, biomechanics, mental fatigue, injury, rehabilitation. Then there are other areas such as sports nutrition, exercise immunology, manual therapies for back pains, etc. that too can be pursued.

Sports science is still a nascent field in the country. Compared to many of the other countries, especially the western world the awareness level about this field is still very low. As a result career opportunities in sports science and rehabilitation have just started picking up in the country. As of now most of the jobs in this field are available abroad.
