Students having a strong background in Physics and Chemistry and fine with working on distant sites and even underground can take up mining engineering as a career. Because of the tough working conditions, a career in mining is very rewarding and the remunerations are very good. As a mining engineer, you will be into designing mines and devising techniques for effective and safe extraction of minerals and ores from these mines. You will be responsible for the operation of the mines as well as the safety of the miners working under you.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math from a recognized board or university. Admissions are mostly on the basis of entrance exams like the JEE Mains. Above 60% marks in 10+2 is desirable.
Duration of this undergraduate course is 4 years.
More about the course
The complete course is divided into 8 semesters. The first two semesters are common for all the branches of engineering. During the course you are taught about the engineering principles, the scientific theories and the latest technologies used to extract minerals from under the surface of the earth. You learn how to design a mine, develop it and operate it, both over the ground as well as underground. You learn about techniques to find and evaluate new mineral deposits, while working along with geologists and metallurgists. You get to know about the processes to separate the minerals from the foreign materials like dirt and rock. Other than topics on mine design and their operations, there are topics on geology, metallurgy, environmental impact due to mining and some more. Visualizing 3-dimensional objects from 2-dimensional drawings is one skill you will have to learn.
Mining engineers either work in mines or at offices. But working at mine sites is more common. Mining jobs are available in both the private and the public sector organizations. Since they have to work at locations far away from home and away from family, mining engineers are well compensated in terms of monetary benefits. In case you are interested for a academic role or a research based job, then you have opportunities for doing a masters or a doctoral degree in this field. You can also aspire to become a mining scientist. A lot many jobs in this field can be found overseas, where there’s a heavy demand for mining engineers.
