Overview of the course
The course is designed from practical point of view. Practical means that the course curriculum is created keeping manufacturing in mind. Generally we would require raw materials to manufacture anything. In case of biology cells are the basic raw materials to create any organism. So industrial biotechnology highly deals with cellular biology.
You need to pass H.S. that is, 10+2 examination with minimum 55%. The subjects taken in this course should be Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Then you need to clear the joint entrance examination for engineering courses. You will be sitting for 3, 100 marks papers, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in JEE Mains examination. Generally if you pass any 2 of these papers you get a rank in JEE. Both your rank and your aggregate score in higher secondary will help you secure a seat in industrial biotechnology in your chosen engineering college.
Future scope in this course
You can opt for studying further after you complete your B.Tech. You can study M.Tech in industrial biotechnology. But for that again you will have to sit for another entrance examination.
Since today companies are investing a lot in biotechnology, you have a great scope of improvement in this genre. Even industrial biotechnology concentrates upon process and software management. This means you will develop the skills in technology and knowledge about the evolution of organisms. You will just have to coordinate these too as applicable in the company. The best thing is that since this stream deals with cellular components it can implemented in food engineering or chemical engineering and other developmental projects. Hence projects involving biotechnological approaches get government attention very quickly. People get huge grants for their company for such projects.
You can join an IT hub in any of the following department right after passing B.tech in industrial biotechnology:
c)Pharmaceuticals in India and abroad.
You can also try to do research in this stream. In that case you can apply for such projects from the government. Otherwise you can join any leading institute that offers research in industrial biotechnology as a trainee or an intern. After you obtain your degree you can pursue your career abroad. You can also opt for scientific officer positions. A lot of companies have research and development teams. In the team they require scientific officers. Initially you will be a junior trainee. Later on you can be the project or team leader. In fact few projects have special positions called project manager. If you show good potential in your work, you can definitely reach there.
