Part of photonics, a sub-field of physics dealing with light and electricity, optoelectronics and laser technology are the latest in technology development revolutionizing the field of science. Converting electrical signals into photons or light signals and vice versa is what comprises optoelectronics. Such devices along with laser technology are finding wide applications in a variety of fields like fiber optics communication, optical information systems, remote sensing, medical diagnosis, treatment, military hardware and so on. Being relatively new, the field has limited scope as of now in the country, but has the potential to grow real big in the near future.
Eligibility and course duration
M.Sc in Physics or bachelor’s degree in electronics, electronics & communication and other related fields. Admission to the course is through GATE marks or by sitting for an entrance test conducted by the respective institute.

Here in this course you learn what photonics or optoelectronics is all about. You will learn how electricity can be converted into light signals and light into electricity. You pick up knowledge about transducers that sense and convert electricity into light and vice versa. You learn of the advances in laser technology and the emerging trends in laser science. You delve deep into topics such as optoelectronic devices, optoelectronic materials, power electronics, microelectronics, Nano photonics, bio photonics and so on. You also learn of the applications of laser in different areas such as medical, industries and in warfare.
As is mentioned above, the amount of jobs available in the country as of now is limited. However, the areas you are most likely to be absorbed in this field are communication, information handling and processing, defence, consumer electronics, cutting industry, energy generation and in medical fields such as radiology, ophthalmology, dermatology and dentistry. There is also a good market for optoelectronics engineers and laser technologists in the world market. The field of research too provides for good scope of work. There are a good many doctoral programs like M.Phil and PhD in photonics that one may opt for. Some of the job profiles in this sector are Optical Design Engineer, Laser Technologist, Signal Processing Researcher and Optical Test Development Engineer. In near future, as technological development picks up speed in this field and more and more of applications come up, there will be a good many job opportunities.
