The B.Ed special education program for mental retardation aims to produce special educators who will be able to educate students suffering from mental retardation. The program trains them on the special skills required to teach students with learning deficiencies or those who are slow learners. The program also focuses on providing administrative and organization skills, so as one may work as a principal, vice-principal or other senior levels at special schools. The course covers subjects related to human growth and development, introduction to disabilities of various kinds such as sensory, locomotive, multiple and neuro. Then there are topics on need identification, assessment and the education scenario in contemporary India. Assignments and projects are part of the curriculum.

Special educators mostly work in special schools and in regular schools too, with provision for special classes. They also work in rehabilitation centres meant for the mentally retarded.
