M.Sc. or Master of Science is a post graduation level degree course which is available in many subjects like Biology, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, etc. M.Sc. in Microbial Biotechnology is a combination of microbiology and its application in Biotechnology. As the candidates study about applications of microbes, the course also includes a bit about industrial biotechnology and pharmaceutics. The course includes basics of micro biotechnology like nomenclature, characteristics of microorganisms, scopes, etc.

Candidates who have completed their graduation in science or related subjects like Bachelor of Science in Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Applied Micro biotechnology, etc from a reputed institute are eligible for this course. They must have secured 60% marks as an aggregate to become eligible for this course. The age criteria need to be checked from the selected institute before submission of application.
For admissions, interested candidates need to submit their duly filled application forms before the last date of submission in the selected institute. This form must be enclosed with application fee and other required documents. Most of the reputed institutes are conducting their own entrance tests to validate the knowledge of candidates and to shortlist the candidates depending upon their performance in the same.
The duration of this course is 2 years or 4 semesters.

After completion of this course, the best suitable option is Ph.D. for those who are having research aptitude and willingness to have the scientific career in future. Ph.D. or Doctor of Philosophy is a research-based degree which allows you to conduct your own research work under the supervision of your guide or supervisor.
The course starts with general topics like introduction to microbiology, microbial biotechnology, principles of Biochemistry, microbial metabolism, etc. Then candidates learn about mycology, phycology, techniques in microbial biotechnology, molecular biology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, and different techniques like bioremediation, biomass production, etc.
The latter part of the course includes topics like Biochemical engineering, bioprocess plant design, genetic engineering of microorganisms, downstream processing, fermented foods, basics of virology, etc.
The course includes theory and lab sessions and candidates also need to complete a short-term project at the end.
These candidates can work in scientific research labs, Pharmaceutical labs, food process industries, academic institutes, etc.
