M.Sc. or Master of Science is a Post Graduation level degree course in the field of science which covers all the different domains of science and related technology. The specialization of Plant Biology and Plant technology deals with the experimental and scientific study of function and structure of biological molecules and their roles. Candidates learn about molecular signaling, regulation f cell growth, enzyme substrate, enzyme actions, genetics, cell biology, DNA Protein interaction, plant physiology and many more.
The course is a combination of experiments and analysis, so candidates having proficiency in designing the experiments and are expert in statistical analysis are ideal for this course.
Further Study options
After completion of this Master’s degree, candidates interested in higher studies can go for M.Phil and then Ph.D. in same or related subjects. These are research-based courses which provide an opportunity to enter the scientific world of research and experiments.
Candidates holding a graduation degree in same or related subject like Bachelor of Science in Biology, Biotechnology, Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology, etc from a recognized institute are eligible for this course. The minimum required marks and age vary from one institute to another and need to be checked from the selected institute before submitting the application form.
For admissions, candidates need to submit their application forms before the last day of submission. It should be enclosed with other required documents and application fee.
In most of the institutes, the admissions are either direct or on merit basis. Only a few reputed institutes conduct entrance tests to validate the knowledge of candidates.
The duration of this course is 2 years which are equivalent to 4 semesters. Each semester ends with final exams and candidates need to clear each semester successfully to complete the course.
The course starts with plant physiology, plant developmental biology, biochemistry, plant cell biology, bio-instrumentation, biostatistics, etc. Then the candidates also learn about plant genetic engineering, molecular pathology, tissue culture, immunology, molecular plant breeding, etc in the latter part of the course.
A part of biodiversity, IPR, Bioethics, nanobiotechnology, molecular pharma biotechnology, etc is also included in the course.
The last semester is a project which needs to be completed in any related firm, labs or company.
These candidates can work in colleges and private biotechnology institutes, government research labs, food preserving, and manufacturing industries, etc.
