It also includes providing facilities for traffic management, traffic safety, repair and maintenance of roads and other traffic accessories. Eligibility and course duration
A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and other related fields. Candidates are admitted to the course through written tests or on the basis of marks obtained in GATE exam. Marks obtained in graduation too has relevance.

Here in this course you will learn the important aspects of highway engineering. You will get inputs on structural masonry, reinforcing of concrete structures, structural analysis of bridges, flyovers, etc. and an in-depth knowledge about steel structures. With a deeper understanding of the concepts involved in highway engineering, you gain greater skills in designing and analyzing the road projects and find solutions for problems, if any. Among other things you learn about earthquake engineering, alternate building materials and innovative construction materials. Few of the topics involved in the study of highway engineering are as follows. They are Highway Infrastructure Design; Traffic Engineering; Urban Transportation Planning; Pavement Material Characterization; Pavement Analysis and Design. A few electives are Road Safety Engineering; Remote Sensing and GPS Systems; Advanced Concrete Technology. Other than that there are topics on transportation management and environmental impacts of highway projects. During the 3rd and 4th semester you get to do a project work based on the subject.
No wonder, an M.Tech qualification in Highway Engineering leads to a job in the construction of roads, highways and even expressways. You will be employed by companies involved in building roads, bridges, flyovers, etc. It will lead to a job in departments and agencies concerned with traffic engineering, urban transportation planning, highway construction, road safety and road maintenance. Your services will also be required by the paramilitary services like Border Road Organization (BRO). Other than that you can pursue a program in M.Phil or PhD.
