As an industrial engineering professional you are responsible to integrate the concepts of people, money, time and resource management with the principles of engineering, ergonomics, design and safety. Since industrial engineering is concerned with maximizing profits by optimizing and quality improvement, it overlaps in certain ways with operation management. As such, in this course other than basics on engineering, one has to study concepts about management science, operations research, systems engineering and management engineering. Some of the other topics concerned with industrial engineering are: project management, accounting, job design, financial engineering, process engineering, ergonomics, safety and quality engineering.

They are also in demand in companies where there is a lot of automation, such as in assembly line production units, for their smooth functioning. Industrial engineers are very much in demand in most industrial units because they are the ones mainly responsible for optimizing the efficiency of a production unit, improve upon the quality and most important, improve the profitability of the businesses.
