Ph.D Photonics

Are you planning to enter into research in the field of optics and photonics? Want to work on the various applications of photonics and concepts such as nanophotonics? Learn here important details of the course PhD Photonics, a field with immense scope.

Course Name: Ph.D Photonics
Group:
Stream: Science
Course Category: Physics
Duration: 3 - 5 years

Overview

As the name suggests, photonics has to do with photons or the field of light. Just like the kind of advances we saw in the field of electronics in the past century, the 21st century is going to see similar or even more revolutionary advances in photonics. Scientists world over are working hard in deciphering everything about light, it’s dual nature, how light propagates and how different materials generate light. These theories are being studied at the atomic level and in some cases at nanoscale. Photonics works beyond the dual nature theory of light, i.e. photons are neither particles nor waves. Also, photonics finds applications beyond the visible spectrum of light.

More about the course

The field of photonics provides for a number of areas to carry out research. Much like what Einstein, long back in the early twentieth century, in a thought experiment had envisioned riding a light wave, scientists working in the field of photonics are making advances something similar. Some of the relevant topics for selecting your research project in the field of photonics can be taken from areas as diverse as applied photonics, optoelectronics, fiber optics, laser physics, optics design, biophotonics, bioimaging, photovoltaics, quantum optics, nanophotonics and so on. With such advanced topics to select from, the field of photonics provides for immense scope for new discoveries and development. While researching on your chosen topic, you also get the opportunity to do a lot of laboratory work, as the field of photonics is quite lab intensive and needs adequate infrastructure. All these works you get to do under the close supervision of your research guide. You will have to submit a dissertation at the end of the course which will list out the research activities undertaken by you.

Job prospects

Undergoing a PhD in Photonics enables you to be appointed in fields as diverse as education, research and industries. Already, the field of photonics is seeing a number of applications in a wide variety of areas such as telecommunication, computing, healthcare, medicine, optics, electronics, fiber optics, biotechnology and medicinal sciences. There are even applications in the manufacturing field, metrology, defense applications and in the entertaining industry.
