The two year duration course is a part of mechanical engineering domain and deals with optimization of existing complex processes and systems. The first year covers the basic sciences while various core and elective subjects are including Probability and statistical methods, work design, applied operations research, production and inventory decisions, manufacturing systems modeling, simulation modeling and analysis, quality engineering, supply chain management, facilities planning and design, reliability engineering, productivity management, decision support systems, lean six sigma, product innovation, advanced optimization techniques etc. In the final year the students are required to complete a project and an internship (depends on the univeristy curriculum) where they apply all the theory learnt to practice.
The post graduates can join consultancy firms, R&D labs of private and public companies in manufacturing, banking, communications, transportation, finance, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, IT, healthcare sports etc. They can take up the job roles like those of product engineer, industrial engineer, sales engineer, marketing manager, industrial designer. A few examples of jobs which a post graduate industrial engineer is expected to carry out could be designing where an equipment could be located in a factory, design a safe product for workers, design an automated material handling system, design reliable and quality control procedure for producing defect free products etc.
Those interested in research can proceed to study for the doctoral program and get a PhD degree.
