About B.E Mining Engineering course
It is a division of engineering in which the students learn about the techniques involved in extracting mineral ores from the natural environment. The minerals include metallic and non-metallic ores and solid fuels. The mining techniques involve drilling, blasting, processing, production, extraction, marketing, etc. Apart from these techniques, the main task of mining engineer is to check that the project on which they are working is environmentally safe and that they are not destroying the natural environment.
This Bachelor’s mining course integrates the aspects of both science and engineering and provides the knowledge of mining- extraction and processing of ores. And this course prepares the candidate to learn the theory and practice of mining to take up leading positions in the mining industry.Duration
The duration of B.E Mining Engineering course is about 4 years, divided into 8 semesters.
- The basic eligibility criteria for pursuing B.E Mining Engineering is a pass degree in Higher Secondary Examination or 10+2 examination in Science stream with subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from a recognized college or university.
- For IIT students, it is mandatory to qualify the Joint Entrance Examination (J.E.E).
The candidates are admitted on the basis of merit ranking of HSC/ JEE.
Who is suitable for B.E Mining Engineering course
- Those candidates who have a strong background in Mathematics and Science, especially Chemistry and Physics are suitable for this course.
- They should have strong problem solving abilities.
The Bachelor’s course is of four year duration with basic sciences covered in the first year followed by core and elective subjects in the next three years. Some major core subjects include Mining Survey, Mining Geology, Exploitation of Mechanics of Fluids and Hydraulic Machines, Mineral Deposits, Mining Machinery, Material Handling, Mine Ventilation, Environmental Hazards, Geomechanics, Mine Design, Electrical Equipment and Instrumentation in Mines, Mine management, Quality and Reliability in Mining, rock Mechanics, Drilling and Blasting etc. As per the curriculum requirement, the students carry out a project and or a six month internship where they learn to apply the theory to practice.
The domain of Mining engineering is one of the most lucrative career options in India. After the completion of the course, the graduates can take jobs in either the government or the private sector in various departments of mining. These departments could be engineering, operations, management, sales, quality control, safety etc. One main example of job opportunity is in the Mines & Minerals Development Corporation and Mining Department of Union and State Government. The job roles could also be as a consulting engineer, rock engineer, mining manager, mine planner, mine safety engineer, maintenance superintendent or mine designer.
Remuneration of a Mining Engineer
The remuneration of a Mining Engineer mainly depends on various factors such as qualification, job profile, work experience and skills. A person with a higher qualification degree along with 2 to 3 years work experience can expect a higher salary. Graduate trainees from engineering colleges gets lower salary as compared to engineers from reputed colleges.
