The eligibility criteria for pursuing a master’s degree are holding a bachelor's degree in (B.E/B.Tech) or any other equivalent branches of engineering.
The candidates are admitted on merit based on the eligibility criteria. Some institutes admit candidates based on merit of Institute level exam.
Mining engineering is a branch of engineering which includes the study of extraction of iron or coal or mineral and production of minerals. The curriculum of this course includes advanced concepts of mining extraction and production. Candidates completing this course contribute to the growth of industrialization and are trained to take up leading positions in the mining domain.
This Master’s course is of two years duration and include a few common subjects related to mining and few specialization / electives related to mine planning, rock mechanics, mine environment. The first year includes theory, practical, seminars, projects etc. and the second year includes project and special topic seminar. The subjects in mine planning are includes Underground Mine Planning, Surface Mine Planning, Planning for Underground Mechanization, Mine Environment Planning, Systems Engineering, Applied Geology in Mine Planning etc. The Rock mechanics area includes Rock Slope Engineering, Underground Space Technology, Rock Fragmentation Engineering, Practices of Rock Mechanics, Instrumentation, Rock mass Structures, Subsidence Engineering, Engineering Geology, Drilling Technology etc. While the area of Mine environment includes Environmental Planning and Management in Surface Mines, Planning and Design of Mine Ventilation Systems, Environmental Hazards and Disaster Management in Mines, Global Environmental Issues, Clean Coal Technology, Waste Management in Mines etc. The final year project and special topic seminar are evaluated based on presentation and dissertation report.
In parts of India where mines and industries are abundant mining jobs are of high demand and there is lack of qualified manpower in this sector. So candidates completing this course can take up job roles dealing in drilling, blasting, material handling, rock mechanics safety, mine ventilation, mine cost engineering, ore reserve analysis, mineral processing etc. The candidates can find jobs in construction industries where the mining engineers are involved in construction of roads, rail roads, tunnels, bridges, underground chambers, hazardous waste disposal industry etc.
In case the candidate is interested in studying further the candidate can opt for doctoral research and complete PhD in the area of interest.
