Introduction


This course is meant for people who are intrigued by analog circuits and want to contribute something new to this domain. Power electronics is a branch of electrical or electronics engineering. You will learn all about transistors and its application in today’s electronics components while doing your B.Tech and M.Tech course. In the Ph.D course, the time will come to implement the knowledge you have gathered in your prior courses and either change or add something new to the perspective of the field of power electronics.

Eligibility criteria


  • You must have obtained a master degree in engineering or technology in either a)Electrical engineering or b)Electronics engineering or c)Electronics and communication engineering

  • There is a cut-off criterion for marks obtained in the master degree. The range of the cut-off is kept between 55-60% in the aggregate score of the master degree.

  • If you have obtained M.Tech. degree then some institutes exempt you from appearing in the entrance examination of the Ph.D program. But quite a lot of institutes have made clearing of an entrance examination mandatory, even for M.tech students.

  • Whether or not you sit for any examination, clearing of one or two rounds of interview is mandatory. You will have to develop a research proposal on power electronics. The format of this research proposal varies among institutes. You will be asked to defend this research proposal in your interview. If you can answer all the questions asked by the examiner through your research proposal, you will be selected as a research associate under one of the research guides provided by the institute.

Advantage of NET examination


NET or National Eligibility Test is meant for people who want to pursue research work as a career. This examination is held twice every year. You have to obtain a rank in the JRF or junior research fellowship category in the NET examination. If you have such a valid NET score in the subject of your Ph.D specialization, you will be directly exempted from the examination. However you will be required to clear the interview.

  1. You can opt for supervisor jobs in any electronics company. You can become senior electronics engineers at companies like IOCL or SAIL. These companies pay higher salaries to NET qualified or Ph.D holders.

  2. You can also opt for professor positions in ECE or EE in any reputed university.
