Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery is a professional undergraduate degree course. After successful completion, including the mandatory internship, one gets to practice as a licensed medical doctor in any of the hospitals or clinics. The students initially learn basic subjects like biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, pathology, anatomy and pharmacology. Later on they get into hands on experience on various aspects of medical study. Simultaneously the trainee doctors start visiting wards and out-patient departments, where they interact with real patients and come to know about their illnesses and the treatment procedures. Standard protocols while treating a patient like history of the patient’s illness, patient examination, differential diagnosis and complete patient management are part of the course curriculum. The students also learn about best investigative methods, treatment options, best practices on ward management, staff management and patient counselling skills.
