Introduction to Post Graduate diploma in Geriatric Medicine
Geriatric medicine deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases and disabilities in elderly persons. The course duration is one year and covers basic geriatrics and clinical geriatrics. The geriatric study focuses on the unique needs and complex medical problems of elderly persons. The program provides knowledge and skills for health care, trains the qualifying doctors in clinical and social skills for treating the patients. The course also updates the physicians with comprehensive care for the elderly. The candidates would be trained in therapeutic, preventive and rehabilitation aspects of elderly persons. Geriatrics are trained in ageing process and provide medical care for people later in life. Elderly persons with different kinds of problems such as memory loss, pain, diabetes, epilepsy, heart diseases and disorders, sleep disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke side effects of medication etc. are treated by geriatrics. The Geriatric doctors work as part of health care team to diagnose and treat the elderly with nurses, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, pharmacists and psychiatrists. The team works upon several aspects of the patients life-social, emotional financial, home setting etc. to treat the elderly. Depending on the state of the patient the doctor may visit them in hospitals/nursing homes/ clinics or at homes.
Syllabus of the course
The course focuses the area of ageing scenario, factors responsible for ageing, the events occurring during the ageing process, care and modern medicine for the elderly. The environmental factors for improving the quality of life of elderly, various process and approaches for counselling the patients, diet/nutrition for elderly. The various schemes for effective rehabilitation and the various scales used for enhancing the quality of life for the elderly are covered in the program. The study includes the aspects of infections, fractures, depression, dementia etc, demography and mortality of the elderly.
