Course overview

Biotechnology is a discipline based on biology and is one of the important upcoming careers today. It focuses on harnessing cellular and biomolecular processes and develop technologies and products which improves the life and health on the planet. In other words wouldn’t you be interested in combating rare diseases, reduce carbon footprint, feed the malnutritioned people, reduce mortality due to infectious diseases, increase crop yield, produce food free of toxins, use cleaner energy, improve manufacturing processes, reduce reliance on petro chemicals, deploy safer and cleaner manufacturing processes? If you aspire to look into any of the above, then looks like a career in biotechnology would definitely suit your taste.

Course group details

Government and private colleges offer UG, PG and PhD degree in biotechnology. The courses are mostly full time since this branch has a large component of practicals. The basic subjects included in the curriculum are biology, chemistry, maths, computing, process engineering, fluid flow, genetics, instrumentation, biochemistry, microbiology, heat transfer, thermodynamics, environmental and food biotechnology, animal cell culture etc.

A biotechnologist is offered job in R&D in academic, industrial and clinical areas, or could work in food and drink, chemical, Pharma, chemical industry, or in sales and marketing, teaching etc. In the pharmaceutical industry a biotechnologist may innovate the design of medicines/ drugs/ vaccine or in the biofuels industry can look into next generation fuel production.

After completing a degree in biotechnology the job profiles offered in the industry can be a medical scientist- understand and treat human diseases, biological technician- handles experimentation in labs, medical and clinical technician – performing blood or tissue tests and biopsies, biochemists- study DNA. RNA and molecules and the impact of drugs on them, biomedical engineers- design and build products for medical use, microbiologists- research micro organisms found in humans, plants and water, epidemiologists- understand causes of diseases and how to prevent them in the future etc.

Are you interested in preparing and meeting society’s tenacious challenges? Then probably biotechnology may be a suitable career choice for you.
