Easily Confused Words: Comfort and Ease

Comfort and Ease are very easily confused due to the slight similarity in meanings.

Comfort can be used both as a verb and as a noun.
As a verb the word comfort has multiple meanings:
(i) In one sense it means: soothe; console; reassure; calm; placate.
Antonym: upset
(ii) In another sense it means: cheer up; encourage; hearten; bolster

As a noun the word comfort has multiple meanings:
(i) In one sense it means: luxury; coziness; wellbeing; security; contentment; relaxation.
Antonym: discomfort.
(ii) In another sense it means: consolation; reassurance; relief; solace; cheer.
Antonym: distress

(i) In one sense it means: effortlessness; no difficulty; simplicity.
Antonym: difficulty.
(ii) In another sense it means (like comfort): luxury
Antonym: hardship

As a noun the word ease has multiple meanings:
(i) In one sense it means: relieve; reduce; lessen; improve; make better; take pressure off
Antonym: worsen
(ii) In another sense it means: facilitate; aid; assist; help; smooth


Sample Usage

Examples of Comfort:
(i) 1. Having a steady income gives one the comfort of financial independence.
2. After years of hard work, Mr. Sawant could enjoy the comfort of his savings after retirement.

(ii) 1. During her solo voyage across the ocean, Peter was comforted by the fact that he could connect with others through his blog.
2. The patient was comforted by the fact that the best Surgeon was going to perform the complicated operation.

Examples of Ease:
(i) 1. Avantika was happy that the ointment eased the pain in her shoulder.
2. Chemotherapy does not always help to ease the pain of stomach cancer.

(ii) 1. The arrival of the larger crane was a welcome sight; it would ease the work of the firemen who were attempting to remove the large blocks of cement which had trapped the residents of the building.
2. The factory manager decided to ease the workload of the workers by giving them some time off during the evening hours.
