1. What does ‘‘Lyrical Ballads’’ say about the Romantic theory of poetic diction?
2. How did the spread of education during the romantic period help the women writers?
3. What is Gray's philosophy of life as expressed in his work ‘‘Elegy written in a Country Churchyard’’?
4. Comment on the use of imagery in ‘Ode to a Grecian Urn’.
5. Write on the experiences of the Mariner.
6. What does Burns convey through ‘‘Highland Mary’’?
7. The central theme of ‘‘Immortality Ode’’ is the immortal nature of the human spirit. Do you agree?
8. What do you understand of the social milieu in ‘‘The Vicar of Wakefield’’?

SECTION B — (4 ? 15 = 60 marks)
Answer any FOUR of the following.
All questions carry equal marks.

9. The Romantic Age is called the second creative period of English Literature – Discuss.

10. ‘‘The West Wind is the all powerful manifestation of Nature’’. Illustrate this with special reference to Shelley's ‘‘Ode to West Wind’’.

11. ‘‘Talisman’’ is a historical fiction – Justify.

12. Critically examine the theme of marriage in ‘‘Emma’’.

13. Write an essay on the symbolism of William Blake's
‘‘The Tyger’’.

14. Trace the development of novel during the Romantic Age.

15. Bring out the romantic elements in any TWO poets you have studied.
