1. (a) Describe Young double slit experiment and obtain an expression for fringe
width.
(b) In Young’s double slit experiment, the slits are 0.0005m apart and interference
is observed on a screen placed at a distance of 1m from the slits. It is found
that the 9th bright fringe is at a distance of 0.008135m from the second dark
fringe from the center pattern. Find the wavelength of light used.
2. (a) Describe qualitative description of Fraunhofer diffraction due to single slit.
(b) Describe how elliptically and circularly polarized light are produced.
3. (a) Describe ultrasonics testing methods that are used in nondestructive testing.
(b) Discuss the applications of ultrasonics.
4. (a) Explain the following terms:
i. Absorption
ii. Spontaneous emission
iii. Stimulated emission
iv. Population inversion
v. Pumping
vi. Optical cavity
(b) Discuss how lasers are helpful in induced fusion and isotope separation processes.
5. (a) Distinguish between dia, para and ferromagnetic materials.
(b) Write short notes on type-I and type-II super conductors.
6. (a) Discuss the signal distortion in optical fibers.
(b) How are the dielectric materials classified?
(c) Write a note on Resolving power of a grating.
7. (a) Sketch the Creep diagram and explain various stages of Creep.
(b) Discuss the thermal protection systems used for space shuttle.
8. Write short notes on the following:
(a) Formation of Newton’s rings
(b) Numerical aperture
(c) Dielectric strength
(d) Plastic deformation by slip.
