2007 Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University B.Tech Civil STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING DESIGN AND DRAWING-I(RCC) setno4 Question paper

Course: B.Tech Civil   University: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University

1. Design a simply supported Rectangular Beam to carry 30kN/m superimposed load
over a span of 6m on 460mm wide supports. Use M20 grade concrete and Fe 415
grade steel. Check the design for all necessary conditions. Draw to a suitable scale.
(a) Longitudinal Section showing reinforcement details.
(b) The cross section of the Beam at salient points, showing reinforcement details.
2. A column of size 500mm x 500mm is carrying an axial load of 800 kN to a soil
having an allowable bearing capacity of 100kN/m2. Design a RCC square footing
using M20 concrete and HYSD-Fe 415 bars. The thickness of the footing at the
free end should be taken as 150mm. Draw to scale
(a) Plan of the footing showing reinforcement details
(b) Sectional elevation of the footing.
PART-B (Marks:16x3=48)
3. (a) Distinguish between static modulus and dynamic modulus of elasticity of con-
crete.
(b) Why does the code limit the compressive strength of concrete in structural
design to 0.67 fck and not fck?
4. Explain briefly the following with neat sketch in RCC.
(a) Under reinforced section
(b) Balanced section
(c) Over reinforced section.
5. A reinforced concrete beam is 200 X 400 mm effective depth. At a particular section
it has 0.9% tension steel and is provided with 8 mm 2 legged design stirrups at 200
mm c/c. calculate the shear resistance of stirrups. Assume M 25 concrete and Fe
415 steel. Take clear cover 40mm.
6. (a) What is the minimum percentage of steel allowed in a R C column? Explain
why it is necessary to specify the minimum percentage
(b) A R.C. column rectangular in section 230mm wide and 300mm deep is re-
inforced with 4 bars of 20mm one at each corner with an effective cover of
50mm. It is subjected to an ultimate axial load of 340 KN, ultimate bending
Moment of Mux=30KN-M about X axis is bisecting the depth and ultimate
moment of Muy=18KN-M about Y axis bisecting the width. Use M20 grade
concrete and Fe 415 grade steel. Check the safety of the column.
7. Design a simply supported one way slab of span 2.8m c/c of supporting beams of
a corridor in office building. Take the live load as 5kN/m2. Use M 20 grade of
concrete and TOR steel of grade Fe 415.
