1. (a) What are the different types of furnaces used in foundry shop? Discuss their
relative advantages and disadvantages.
(b) State any four common green sand casting defects and give their causes and
remedies. [8+8]
2. (a) Give the classification of centrifugal casting. Discuss the applications of each
class.
(b) Discuss the various types of gates that are normally used. [6+10]
3. Write short notes on the following:
(a) Welding rods
(b) Fluxes
(c) Gas flames
(d) Working pressure of gasses in welding and cutting [4+4+4+4]
4. (a) Why is cleaning of metal important for successful resistance welding? Explain.
(b) State the purpose of Thermit welding. Where would you recommend it and
why? [8+8]
5. (a) Explain various tests conducted for the qualification of Welds.
(b) Explain the following metal joining techniques
i. Wave soldering
ii. Induction brazing
iii. Brazewelding. [8+8]
6. (a) Explain with a neat sketch the punch and die setup for cutting off operation.
(b) Sketch and explain Nibbling, Bending and Ironing. [7+9]
7. (a) How welded pipes are manufactured? Describe with the help of neat sketches.
(b) Discuss the functions of die-angle in wire drawing. [10+6]
8. (a) Why the strength of a forged part is greater than cast part? Explain.
(b) Discuss the forces acting on the stock and dies in forging operation. [8+8]
