1. (a) With suitable example distinguish the terms
i. ore

(b) Do we find metals in free state? Why most of the metals are available in the
combined state? Explain.
(c) Explain various methods available for sampling of ores. [5+5+6]
2. (a) Explain the major di erences between wet grinding and dry-grinding.
(b) Explain the following:
i. open circuit grinding
ii. closed circuit grinding. [8+8]
3. Explain the following:
(a) Equivalent diameter (sizing)
(b) E ectiveness of sieving test
(c) Plain weave & Twilled weave
(d) Micromesh sieves
(e) Micro plate sieves. [16]
4. (a) With the help of a neat sketch describe the constructional details and working
of Allen cone. What are its important applications.
(b) What are the factors, on which the performance of classifier depend? Explain
them in detail. [8+8]
5. Critically analyse the principle of working and relative advantages, disadvantages
and applications of
(a) Lessing process
(b) Bertrand process and
(c) Dupont process in heavy liquid separation process. [16]
6. (a) With the help of a neat sketch, explain how a pneumatic Jig works. What are
the advantages and disadvantages of this Jig.
(b) Summarise the factors controlling the operation and eciency of pneumatic
Jigs. [8+8]
7. (a) With the help of a sketch explain how DENVER sub-aeration floting machine
works. Discuss its advantages and important applications.
(b) Explain the similarities and dissimilarities between flotation and agglomera-
tion. [11+5]
8. Write short notes on the following:
(a) Advances in permanent magnets.
(b) New-magnetic circuits.
(c) High intensity wet magnetic separators. [6+5+5]
