Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
? ? ? ? ?
1. (a) Discuss Fick’s laws of di usion. Write stepwise expressions to explain them.
(b) Explain about the following:
i. Pipe di usion
ii. Lattice di usion
iii. Entharpy of motion. [7+9]
2. (a) Explain the various factors that a ect activation energy.
(b) Explain the mechanism of di usion in Ionic compounds with suitable examples
and figures. [8+8]
3. (a) Calculate the equilibrium constant for the reaction
NiO + H2 = Ni + H2Oat750oC
from the following data:
Ni + 1/2 O2 = NiO Go = -58, 450 + 2355Tcal
H2 + 1/2O2 = H2O Go = -58900 + 13.1Tcal
(b) Calculate the CO/CO2 ratio in equilibrium with Carbon at 727oC assuming
that the total pressure to be 2 atm. 2C + O2 = 2CO Go
1000 = -95.3
kcal
C + O2 = CO2 Go
1000= -94.0 kcal [8+8]
4. (a) Define and explain the terms Cp and Cv and derive the thermodynamic rela-
tionship betweent them.

(c) Define and explain the term molar heat. What are units in which it is ex-
pressed. [8+4+4]
5. (a) Discuss the significance of knowing specific heat, thermal conductivity and
melting point of a solid. What factors influence the thermal conductivity of
solids? Explain them.
(b) A copper rod of 50 mm diameter has to be fitted into a circular hole in a 70
cu-30 zinc brass plate of diameter 49.98 mm. To what temperature the brass
plate has to be heated so that the copper rod just fits into the hole in the
brass plate. Assume room temperature to be 30oC and a = 20 × 106 oC-1.
[10+6]
6. (a) State and explain Sievert’s law.

mole fraction for an ideal solution. [6+10]
7. (a) What is the significance of phase rule? Discuss its applications and limitations.
(b) Explain the di erences between a liquidus line and solidus line. Explain how
the liquidus line is obtained for an eutectic system. [8+8]
8. (a) Derive an expression for Gibb’s-Helmholtz equation to galvanic cells.
(b) What do you understand by thermodynamics of electrochemical cells? Explain
briefly. [8+8]
