1. (a) Explain the engineering importance of di usion. State and Explain Fick’s first
and second law.
(b) Explain the phenomenon of di usion in all states of matter.
(c) Distinguish between thermal energy; kinetic energy and activation energy.

2. Distinguish between the following.
(a) Steady state and unsteady state of di usion.
(b) Di usivity and permeability. [8+8]
3. (a) Discuss the derivation and uses of the oxygen nomographic scale in Richard-
sons diagram.
(b) Discuss in detail about the properties of a single standard free energy change/temperature
line. [8+8]
4. (a) Define and explain the terms C
p and C
v and derive the thermodynamic rela-
tionship betweent them.
(b) Explain why Dulag-pesit law is not applicable at low temperatures.
(c) Define and explain the term molar heat. What are units in which it is ex-
pressed. [8+4+4]
5. (a) What are the di erences between lattice thermal conductivity e ects and
thermo electric e ects of solids.
(b) The volume of a cubical block of metal changes by 0.15%. When its tempera-
ture is raised by 30oC compute the coecient of linear expansion of the metal.

6. (a) What do you mean by ‘activity’ of a component? How it can explain the
behavior of a solution? Also explain about ‘activity coecient’ with suitable
example.
(b) Derive gibb’s-Duhem equation N1dG1 + N2dG2=0 from first principles. [9+7]
7. (a) What is the significance of phase rule? Discuss its applications and limitations.
(b) Explain the di erences between a liquidus line and solidus line. Explain how
the liquidus line is obtained for an eutectic system. [8+8]
8. (a) Di erentiate between electrochemical cells & electrolytic cells.
(b) Explain in detail about the concentration cells. [8+8]
